Windy week 25-30 September. Session 2....
Went out for beers with Jon and Pat last night and was feelling a tad worse
for wear in the morning. Needed a sail to sort me out. Wind eventually
filled in around 1ish so treated my van - now repaired with new starter
motor, £120... :( - to its first trip to Shoreham.
Not much wind on arrival, so didn't rig up in a hurry. 5.9 with minimal
downhaul, but wind had picked up just as I was walking down to the water,
so downhauled some more. Nothing special to start with, just nicely powered
up, under autumnal sunny skies, all good. First session with my new (2nd
hand) MK carbon boom and it was noticeably stiffer than my North alloy,
although not making as much of an obvious difference as I had been
expecting. Also fittings aren't quite as neat as on the North. Still, a
very good purchase for only £45. Probably improving my kit's performance
without me realising.
After about an hour wind really kicked in proper woohoo! Couldn't sheet in
properly now. Thought about just whacking on max downhaul, but nah, sod
that, it's proper 5.2 weather. So changed down. Correct decision! Wind was
honking now and I was stacked, had to apply max downhaul to the 5.2, all
good! The Bee may be old and knackered but she still puts a huge grin on my
face every time she's in proper powered up 5.2 weather. Goes like shit off
the proverbial shovel. Much easier to carry speed into the gybes than with
the 5.9, and I planed out of a couple, oh yeah. A small swell was running,
more wavey than Sunday definitely, allowing one or two half decent jumps
when the ramps presented themselves.
Wind kept on picking up and Mrs Bee started getting seriously frisky, even
though Mr 5.2 wasn't overpowered. Had to concentrate more on keeping her on
the water than going full on for manouevers. After about 45 mins of this
came in for a break. Back out again and bizarrely the wind died :( Not to
worry, I'd had my fill.
Decent session, better than Sunday, the hour maxed on the 5.2 made it. Have
to say, sailing at Shoreham is becoming a tad repetitive, will be at Hove
tomorrow if conditions are right.
Building works next to our department, no-one knows if we are safe to work
or not so complete chaos, of which I've taken advantage and scored the next
3 days off!!! "Study leave"... Can't believe my luck, during this windy
week, cracking conditions, low tide in the afternoons, has even been sunny
and still summer suit weather, I can sail every single day, oh yes oh yes!
Windsurfing has been sooo frustrating recently but finally luck is on my
side. Proper sub 5.0 wind forecast for Wednesday and Friday - bring it on.
